Borough of Castle Shannon

Nestled in a scenic valley just six miles from Downtown, Castle Shannon Borough was incorporated in 1919 from parts of Baldwin Township, Mt. Lebanon and Bethel Township.   Castle Shannon’s well-maintained neighborhoods, schools and businesses offer residents an affordable, convenient, and desirable place to live.

Castle Shannon offers easy access to major highways and swift transportation to Downtown by the light rail transit system.  Housing vacancy rates remain low and elementary school enrollment in Castle Shannon have been on the rise for several years.

The Castle Shannon Revitalization Corporation was founded in 2009 to improve the Castle Shannon Business District through growth and development. It is operated by citizens, neighbors, business owners, parents, and other active participants in Castle Shannon.  Its projects include a streetscape plan and watershed development.

Did You Know?

  • The first families settled Castle Shannon in 1786 in pursuit of farmland and timber. The most prominent farm was owned by David Strawbridge, who named it Castle Shanahan. Over time, the farm would lend its name to the area, as “Shanahan” would evolve into “Shannon.”
  • Comedian Dennis Miller grew up in Castle Shannon and attended St. Anne School and Keystone Oaks High School.
  • The First National Bank in Castle Shannon was the site of a much-publicized bank robbery in 1917. $18,500 was taken in the robbery, of which $10,500 was immediately recovered from one man who was shot during the escape. The full sum was never recovered.
